TIL: Pimsleur 1-8

The most annoying part about writing these notes is that there’s a part of me that really wants to adhere to style guide. I mean… I wrote this sentence explicitly because I couldn’t think of an image to add as my header, and so that the text would align better once I start writing my notes. Damned brain.

It’s decidedly difficult to pay attention to Pimsleur when not on the treadmill. I try to work out muscles two days a week… which results in counting and concentrating　what I’m doing just enough so that every now and then my attention is decidedly not on the audio. I guess on these days, I should probable either re-listen to what I did the previous day… or on the following day I should re-listen to whatever it is that I’m not confident I took in. At any rate, here’s the vocabulary from the eighth lesson.

Pimsleur 1-8
Words:

さん – Appended to family names in the same way that we would add Mr, Professor, Dr, Ms, etc. in English. An honourific
ひるごはん – lunch, or literally “mid-day rice”
あさごはん – breakfast, or literally “morning rice”. ((not part of the lesson))
ばんごはん – dinner, or literally “evening rice”. ((not part of the lesson))
ごはん – used to mean meal, but also “rice”. ((not part of the lesson))
に – two (already learned in Human Japanese).
ほん – counter for long skinny objects… such as cups, glasses, spoonsful, cuttlefish, octopuses, crabs, squid, abalone, boats… basically counters are a nightmare part of Japanese… if you are to order two drinks, you must use a counter.
ビールにほん – two bottles of beer
おねがいします – please / could you please
か – or. While ka is used at the end of a sentence to be a question mark, it can also be used between words to state “or”
ビールかお酒 – beer or sake
します – the verb, do
きます – the verb, buy
ホテルで – at the hotel
だれ – who?
だれと – with whom?
あなたと – with you
ええ – yes ((hard to get used to anything but hai))
ほしいです – want, was mentioned last night, but I spelled it wrong. There should be a held “i” sound.
ほしくありません – the correct spelling of I do not want.
何を – [なに]を – what

Phrases:
ひるごはんをたべます。 – I’m going to eat lunch. ((At this point, Google Translate scares me… with its translation being: “Noon you will eat your rice.”))
It’s hard to tell since Pimsluer is an audio lesson… but there is no お particle. The 「を」 character is attached to the end of a word to signify that that word is the direct object of the verb. I’m not 100% sure if I’ve fudged that up in past notes, but I should be able to remember it going forward.
いつたべますか。 – when are you going to eat?
いまたべます。I’m going to eat now.
いつひるごはんをたべますか。 – when are you going to eat lunch?
どこでたべますか。 – where are you going to eat?
ええビールがほしいです。 – yes, I want beer.
いいえいまほしくありません。 – No, I don’t want any now.
ビールをのみますか。 – will you have beer?
ビールにほんおねがいします。 – two beers, please.
お酒おねがいします。 – sake, please.
ビールかお酒をのみますか。 – beer or sake to drink?
何をしますか。 – what will you do?
なんかかいます。 – I’m going to buy something.
だれでもと。 – but with whom?
いまなにをしますか。 – Now what are you going to do?
ええでもあとで。 – Yes, but later.
